On the afternoon of October 14, 2024, a delegation from the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), led by Wang Chengjie, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of CIETAC, visited the Order of Attorneys of Brazil (OAB) and held friendly talks with Luis Carlos Szymonowicz, President of the OAB São Paulo International Relations Commission.
The Order of Attorneys of Brazil (OAB) was established in 1930 and is responsible for managing the legal profession in Brazil. It is the highest representative body for lawyers in the country, supervising more than 1.3 million attorneys nationwide, with its headquarters located in the Federal District of Brazil.
President Luis Carlos Szymonowicz warmly welcomed the CIETAC delegation and provided an in-depth introduction to the history and organizational structure of the OAB, the characteristics of the Brazilian legal system, recent legal reforms, and developments in arbitration and dispute resolution. He emphasized the hope that CIETAC, as a leading arbitration institution with international influence and extensive experience in handling international commercial disputes, could work with the OAB to promote arbitration legal services in Brazil.
Secretary General Wang Chengjie acknowledged that lawyers are the core driving force behind the development of arbitration and play a crucial role in promoting international legal exchanges in arbitration. He pointed out that CIETAC has long been committed to fostering international arbitration cooperation. The main purpose of this visit to Latin America was to deepen mutual understanding with law firms, bar associations, and arbitration institutions in this region, including Brazil, and to further enhance cooperation in arbitration legal services to ensure stable and orderly development of China-Latin America economic and trade investment activities.
The two sides exchanged views on the characteristics and practices of arbitration legal systems in China and Brazil, the involvement of lawyers and arbitrators in international arbitration, and the training of international arbitration talents. They reached a consensus on strengthening future exchanges and cooperation between the legal communities of China and Brazil, and on promoting international dispute resolution towards a more equitable and inclusive legal culture.
Guo Yinghui, General Representative of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) Representative Office in Brazil, and Wang Haocheng, Deputy Secretary General of CIETAC Hong Kong Arbitration Center, accompanied the delegation during the visit.
